Esther is ten years old. After a long period of difficult chemotherapy treatments, she began to fall into despondency. Even the best of the volunteers were unable to cheer her up. She began to withdraw into herself, cutting herself off from those surrounding her.
A telephone call from her father one fine Sunday morning showed us that even if the results of the Melaveh Malka party were not evident on the spot, something had entered her heart and left its mark on her soul. Esther had asked to have a Melaveh Malka party just for her in her own room the following week, related the happy father. “She learned Zichron Menachem’s theme song – Together we shall overcome – and she wants to sing it with the boys next week.” The next Saturday night, the medical staff was stunned. Esther stood up on a chair all by herself and sang for the boys, clapping her hands in joy.
“You have saved her!” exclaimed the overjoyed parents.
